Every time I get the opportunity to design a film my focus is on helping to get the most out of the story the director wants to tell by supporting the narrative through design. For this I invite the crew to dive into the story world around the story. It all starts with research into the envisioned storyworld and I try to get the best people on my art department who are likeminded in terms of what design can be for the narrative. In our department there is a lot of talk about the story before we get practical. Once we get practical the goal is to make the impossible possible; to make it happen. The times we succeed I enjoy the reaction of the director, the d.o.p. , the actors when they enter the world we’ve created in which they can play.
