Designing narratives. Creating worlds. Sharing stories by visualising.

Romke Faber studied production design and graduated in 2007 at the Amsterdam based Dutch Film Academy. He received the student award for best production design for a student graduation film Gödel (dir. Igor Kramer) at the Munich Film Festival 2007.

Assisting the following years in different art departments for several designers on various film projects he gained the experience to start designing short feature films from 2013 onwards.

Designing narrative spaces inspired by a world building process which invites other departments to co-create a powerful story for an audience to be immersed in.

WORLD BUILDING

Since 2008 advocating and implementing the world building process as expressed by the World building Institute in Los Angeles through Alex McDowell RDI and Juan Diaz Bohrquez. Besides experiencing the process I have also given presentations and workshops at the Nederlandse Film Academie, Nederlands Film Festival, Hogeschool van de Kunsten Utrecht, Noordelijk Film Festival and Imagine Film Festival amongst others.

2015 – Inspired by world building, personal narrative and the Netherlands film industry together with fellow filmmakers have been working in spare time on a personal project with intended several media-outcomes.

2020 – Present – involved in the international world building project JUNK initiated by the World Building Institute. This is a project in which international students of academies and universities (United States, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Denmark, Spain, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Mexico amongst others) build a world 300 years in the future based on the detritus of our current world.

2024/2025 – Film Forward – Vrijplaats op Maat: Beeldbepalers – Visual Storytelling. As participant of this Vrijplaats I could my together together with my fellow filmmakers to iterate on our world building project we have been working on together since 2015.

Education

2022 – Present – teaching production design at the Netherlands Film Academy in Amsterdam. Focusing on implementing awareness of narrative possibilities of design in the curriculum by using analogue and digital technologies.
